What We Do

Through our three-step nSight process, MarketStance turns mountains of data from disparate, often conflicting sources into useable and reliable information that can shed new light on the big and small challenges facing those in the industry every day. To develop this proprietary information:

  1. We integrate data from more sources than anyone else:
    • Produces richer, more accurate descriptions of insureds and the market
    • Provides a view of the competitive landscape never before possible.
    • Sophisticated classification mapping capabilities mean we can successfully correlate data from multiple sources including:
      • State-level statutory filings
      • Specific carrier records
      • Economic Census,
      • County Business Patterns,
      • OSHA,
      • Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey,
      • Various others
    • Sequencing data with different original measurement periods into "same year" relevance adds more accuracy, detail and timeliness.
    • Bridges the gaps and limitations of any single source

  2. We analyze this integrated data from the bottom-most detailed level
    • Ensures accuracy, even at the lowest, most detailed levels
    • Identifies the subset of dimensions key to decision-making.
    • MarketStance Information is:
      • Exposure specific-payroll, employment, property values, sales, vehicles.
      • Highly granular-by business class, by account size, by territory, by line of coverage.
      • Retrievable in various classification formats and
      • Unlike any other resource available in its completeness, convenience and usability.

  3. We validate our information to ensure its reliability and value as a decision support resource:
    • Dozens of automated tests verify computations
    • Cross checks compare MarketStance aggregations to A.M. Best and Census totals
    • Manual checks test MarketStance estimates against independently derived benchmark analyses.
    • Client carriers routinely compare MarketStance data to their own

How We Started

In the late 1990’s, Fritz Yohn (a PhD in Economics) applied his unique combination of experience in the insurance industry with his skills and expertise in economics and statistics to invent a new form of insurance resource.

Called MarketStance, this database and the methods used in its development overcame the traditional limitations of the information being used in the insurance industry. The technology was first incorporated into a marketable product in 1997 under the auspices of Conning & Company. MarketStance was an operating division of Conning until December 2000, when it was purchased in a management buyout.

Today, MarketStance remains the only source for comprehensive and timely information in a singled unified resource. It has become an important tool for all but one of the top 20 P&C carriers, as well as for numerous regional and specialty carriers, brokers and MGAs.

Equally important, MarketStance knows how to apply this information and other data sources the study of various insurance-specific issues. The MarketStance skill in data integration, for example, enables carrier policy level data to be included and assessed in conjunction with broader market information, producing unique pictures of potential, obstacles and opportunities that can be effectively leveraged by carriers to their performance advantage.

Our Vision

To provide high value information products and services to the insurance industry by delivering distinctive, proprietary, industry-specific and actionable business information.
